Stihl BG86 Leaf Blower Review

Stihl is a German brand and one of the leading manufacturers of chain saws since its inception in 1926.

With the increase in demand from construction and landscaping markets and also a newly introduced professional market pushing it to extend its limit, it started expanding and even manufacturing home-house outdoor power equipment.

The Stihl BG86 is their most powerful gasoline-powered hand-held blower designed keeping in mind the requirements of landscaping professionals.

Stihl claims to bring together the best of both worlds, ultimate power, and simplicity, with the BG86. Let’s start off by having a look at the different features that this powerful machine boasts off.

STIHL Easy2Start:

This is one of the features unique to STIHL. It makes the Stihl Outdoor power tools effortless and eliminates the need to give the starting cord a strong pull or a hard jerk.

This advanced starting system is designed to make the products fast and easy to use. The Stihl easy2start minimizes the shock caused by the compression of the engine during start.

This is achieved by the use of a spring and rubber element in the starter handle that takes away the shock from the user’s joints and muscles.

The Easy2Start System is complemented with a soft and comfortable grip handle that adds to the shock-absorbing effect.

To start the BG86 you need to move the blower’s “stop” switch to “run” position. Once this is done squeeze the throttle trigger, which is beneath the handle and press in the lock-out button simultaneously.

Place the blower on the ground, hold it firmly with one hand and hold the starter with the other. Now pull the starter grip slowly until you feel it engage and then give the starter grip a quick pull to start it off.

It’s that simple and people who often complain that the BG86 is difficult to start have not performed the above steps carefully and have rushed through them.

Throttle Trigger Lock with Built-In Momentary Stop Switch:

The BG86 has a built-in stop switch which allows the user to turn off the engine by simply pressing the button or the lever.

When the engine is switched off, the throttle lock automatically returns to the “start” setting. So whenever you want to get back to work your power tool or the blower is already ready to get started.

Anti-vibration system:

The Stihl BG86 features an anti-vibration system to provide more comfort to the operator by reducing the fatigue or numbness caused by vibrations.

Intense vibrations at the handle can also lead to long-term effects of blood vessels in the hands and the arms of the operator.

The anti-vibration system dampens the oscillations that generate from the machine’s engine and thereby significantly reduces the vibrations at the handle accounting for comfortable and safer operation.

Manual Fuel Pump( Purger):

The BG86 has a small fuel pump that delivers fuel to the carburetor at the touch of a button. This minimizes the number of starting strokes required after long operational breaks. The purge pump primer further enhances the easy starting feature of the BG86.

It is designed in such a way that it enables the operator to prime the carburetor with fuel without being able to flood the machine by priming the carburetor too many times. Flooding the engine is still possible if the choke is not removed after the engine fires.

STIHL 2-MIX engine with stratified charge system:

The Stihl BG86 has a 2-stroke engine with a stratified charge. This system is known for its energy efficiency and reduces the fuel consumption of the regular two-stroke engine by about 20%. It is also responsible for reduced exhaust emissions.

A fuel-free layer of air is created between the burned charge in the combustion chamber and the fresh charge in the crankcase thereby reducing the amount of fuel lost during the charge cycle.

The two ring pistons in the engine improve the efficiency and hold the compression for a longer time.

They are better equipped in transferring the heat from the piston to the cylinder and keeps the engine cooler and enable it to last longer.

HD2 Filter:

The Stihl BGprovides better protection of the engine compared to standard air filters86 boasts of a washable HD2 filter made from polyethylene filter material that provides better protection of the engine compared to standard air filters.

The HD2 filter has up to 70% finer pores than those of fleece and polyamide and therefore is capable of eliminating even the finest dust. The HD2 filter repels oil and water and is therefore very easy to clean.

The PET filter cartridge can be easily removed and inserted without tools and has a long life and incurs lower maintenance costs.

The large surface area of the filter is responsible for longer run times between cleanings and provides a peak performance even while operating in dusty and dry conditions.

Other features:

The Stihl BG86 comes with adjustable flat and round nozzles that bring about versatility to its use. It has a protected easy to replace the spark plug and a protected spark arrestor muffler in addition.

The muffler has large baffles that help in reducing the sound level and a screen that is designed to reduce the emission of sparks.

The upright translucent fuel tank enables easy refueling and allows the operator to check the fuel level before starting the operation.

  1. Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to long-term effects on the blood vessels in your hands and arms. STIHL has developed an effective anti-vibration system where by the oscillations from the machines engine are dampened. This is the reason I prefer STIHL and recommend it to others as well.
